Washing Cloth Diapers 101

Picture 482

*Jordan this "hippy" post is for you*

I have talked with a couple of people who are interested in using cloth diapers, but they just feel like it would be too much work. I haven't been at it long, but if you know me you know that I am good at 2 things, talking about myself giving advise and talking about poop. Therefore I am going to jump at any opportunity that allows me to do both.

Here it goes...

This information only pertains to Bum Genius diapers. I find that they work the best out of all the ones I purchased and are the easiest to care for.

Step 1- Wash all soiled diapers with 1 scoop of Charlie's Soap on a cold cycle (do not use a hot cycle first because it will set in stains.)

Step 2- Wash the diapers again with 1 scoop of Charlies Soap on a hot cycle.

Step 3- Make sure all the soap is washed away by running the diapers through a quick rinse cycle.

Step 4- Dry the diapers for about 40 minutes.

You're Done! See its not that time consuming (assuming you aren't standing in front of the washer and dryer the entire time waiting for the load to get done.)

*Wash diapers every other day to avoid staining and stinking up the entire neighborhood.

*If there is poop on the diaper, get it off in the toilet first before throwing it in the diaper pail. It may sound gross, but I'm pretty sure you should be doing the same thing if you are using disposables. Think about it, isn't it kind of gross to have human poop in your garbage can???

*It is recommended that you add 1/4 cup of bleach to the hot cycle once a month for further disinfecting.

*This brand doesn't recommend the use of any additives such as baking soda or vinegar so it makes it even easier.

*Use Charlie's Soap (unless you want to spend your evenings stripping.) Most of the other soaps out there contain enzymes which cause build up on the lining of the diaper (this leads to leaking and rashes.)
